Can we take that need help stock header off the front page?

You'd be amazed how restricted what can be done with the Front Page is. Still, I'll take suggestions for replacements.

... you can just delete that text from the frontpage.

Heya all! :D
I have one question then. :)
Now I know that some of you have heard of and read anything about the whole entire 'Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harbin_International_Ice_and_Snow_Sculpture_Festival http://wikitravel.org/en/Harbin_Ice_Festival http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Harbin_Ice_Festival <-' before right. :)
Well, I was wondering if at least one of you can found and create a 1,000% 'Ice Elemental' Water Internal Style based on and/or off of the whole entire 'Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival'? :)

Somebody really needs to re-upload the Half-Burnt Manual elsewhere. A friend of mine just caught malware from that Sendspace link. Other people have also reported problems with it too.

zechstyr said

at 12:39 pm on Aug 3, 2015

Hey, I'm working on it. That seems to be a problem if you try to download using the Sendspace accelerator. I'll be trying to upload it straight to the wiki. Also if that doesn't work I'm open to suggestions for other places as well.

Lord Specineff13 said

at 4:01 pm on Aug 10, 2015

I can try to upload it here, as long as there's enough space for it. The book is about 51 MB in size.

Lord Specineff13 said

Whoops, looks like a no-go here. It's just a little over what this wiki allows in filesize.

zechstyr said

at 7:17 pm on Aug 10, 2015

Yeah, even zipped it's pretty big. Sorry, just came back from a vacation. Will probably just put it up on Google Docs and let people grab it straight from there. We put it on sendspace at first to gauge exactly how many people downloaded it- statistics for the sake of figuring out how many people are playing Wulin and are interested.

zechstyr said

at 12:17 pm on Sep 19, 2015

And now for some reason it's totally unavailable? OK, I've uploaded a gdocs version instead.

Nald said

Don't drag crap from off site here.

Ray of Speed said

at 10:34 pm on Sep 19, 2015

Uh huh. Well, anyway, if you're grabbing from sendspace, don't click the sendspace accelerator link since it's obviously malware.

I uploaded an optimized version of the Half-Burnt Manual to the wiki. I don't believe it lost any features (bookmarks, images, etc.) in the optimization process, but if someone(s) would be so kind to double check that would be great. If everything looks in order, we could host that version directly from this site.

I note that the updated Half-Burnt Manual still has a significant annoyance lurking on page 127. A Master's Power Only Grows remains... woefully incomplete, the text brutally interrupted mid-sentence. :P

zechstyr said

Whoops, that'd be my fault. I wrote that one and I think I got distracted mid-sentence. Nice catch.

Announcing our LotW 1.5 fan update!

We spent time poring over the rules and reorganizing, cutting, adding, and streamlining where we could. The result keeps to the spirit of the original game while making the rules easier to understand.

We received an endorsement (of sorts) from The Powers That Be, too! http://mushroompress.blogspot.com/2019/01/other-legends-of-wulin-project.html

Very interesting. I'd wanted to do some similar stuff like reorging the book when we worked on the Half-Burnt Manual. I greatly enjoy the NPC Quick Creation Guide as well. Keep it up, guys!

I love this. While the 1.0 had its charms, this is much easier to flip through, and seems like it'd be easier to teach new players with (besides lacking Loresheets, KF styles, and the like entirely). A couple notes off the top of my head:

1) Entanglement isn't talked about. I see it mentioned on pages 27, 28 and 36, but not actually explained in-depth. It's not named and defined as Entangled Destiny, nor is it noted that one needs to spend both 50 Destiny & 50 Entanglement to advance one's Rank. It seems like the 1.5.2 should probably address that.

2) While I understand the intention to make Block more useful in combat, why in the world was it made a stat you could Cover Ground with? That makes no sense, thematically speaking. Block is all about parrying, blocking an attack or interrupting it from happening. Movement capability plays no part in that, that's what Footwork is for. In 1.0, Block was the only defense not penalized by medium/heavy armor, because most Footwork focused builds never used armor for thematic reasons - and also because heavy armor makes it harder to dodge attacks, no? It seems like an odd change to make Block capable of doing pretty much ALL the same things as Footwork did for Dodge...

-2a) And how does one visualize a Block-based Cover Ground in the first place? Block is a reactive stat, it covers defensive actions... how does that translate to Cover Ground to move around? How would that even look like?

3) Just to confirm: Mastery of an External doesn't give you the +5 over the limit in a Skill via Skill Break automatically, it just gives you permission to buy a Skill to +5 over the limit, correct?

kenmadragon said

at 1:44 am on Jul 30, 2019

Okay, I just noticed that there was a link for 1.5.2 up, not the 1.5.1 I found two days ago and read through over the last couple days. So... ignore my points for 1 and 3. Still, I'm puzzled about point 2. Block still doesn't make sense as a Cover Ground stat for me, even with the description of "smash one's way through". That seems more appropriate for the Damage stat, not Block...

Honshu said

You're right, it doesn't make sense, and it's excessively stupid, both thematically and gameplay-wise, to try to justify Block as being used for a Cover Ground Wave.

It's stupid thematically because the qualities that Block refers to *physically impeding an incoming attack*. Page 174 is crystal clear on this; if you're moving, it's more Footwork. If you're interfering, it's more Block.
It's stupid gameplay-wise because turning Footwork and Block into Stat X and Stat X instead of Stat X and Stay Y is DUMB. It dissolves any feeling of difference between the statistics, and thus erodes the meaningful differences between styles.

What Block needs is a GM who recognizes that it's fine to use Block for unique Waves, Marvels, and certain Minor Actions, based on the thematic flavor of the Block statistic, and a player who grows beyond what the rulebook says you can do in order to take advantage of them. The purpose of Waves, Marvels, and Minor Actions is to give the GM a system to resolve player intent!

If a player tells you that he wants to protect someone from, say, the thrown dart of some ninja styled xia, do you tell him "Sorry, no can do, the rules don't specifically say you can use Block to do that"? That's absurd. What you SHOULD say is, "Perform a Block based Minor Action and name the character you want to protect. If the attacker wishes to attack the person you choose, he needs to beat your Minor Action with a thematically justified Marvel. If he can't do it, you get to roll defense on that character's behalf." Bam, done. Should a player be allowed to do that same thing with Footwork just because he really wants to? No, because that's not what Footwork IS.

Block DOESN'T do the same thing as Footwork, and it SHOULDN'T. I get that changing Zones is useful and important in many fights, but the answer is NOT "make two identical stats."

Sorry to flame, but it's always been a terrible idea, and it's a terrible idea here, too.

Does anyone actually use this, besides me, anymore? The last thing added that wasn't mine was several years ago. Of course, I'm still going to update with new things as I make them for the game I'm running, but... I'm a little curious where the community went.

Honestly, its been a long time since I've been able to drum up interest in this system with anyone, compared to other systems. While the system is aesthetically interesting, its a bit of a hard sell with its mechanics and flavor being so intertwined. I admit, when I first found the game I got the distinct sensation that the game was already dead. For my part, its simply not worth the energy when I could find a game using other systems.

Verloren said

Oof. But nice to see someone else is still around, at least.

I really only glance at this when I get a notification, so I feel bad for getting your hopes up. Sorry.

Warpmind said

Yeah, I think part of the problem is that the physical books never made it out... still stuck in China, as I understand it? (Ironic.)

It's hard to get a game going, as the combat system is... a little on the slow side, with a lot of mathematics and counting, though I suppose if someone could get it into the Roll20 platform, which would be a project and a half in itself, it might be able to raise a little more interest again.

Honestly, I've found more use in it lately in adapting aspects of it to OTHER systems - converting Internal Kung Fu to Mage: The Ascension, for example, for a Chinese-American alchemist. But I still look in when I get a notification.

kenmadragon said

at 1:26 pm on Jun 18, 2021

Yeah, I've used the game as inspiration for some of my other games and writing, but I've never actually been able to get a game together IRL. So, despite being a fan of the system and stuff, I've never actually had the oppurtunity to really play it myself because I never found a group to play with. If anyone's got plans on running a game of LotW online via something like Roll20 or whatever, I know I'd be interested in joining in so I can actually play the game more than just read the rules and come up with loads of ideas whenever I read through wuxia-stories and comics...

It might help if there was a bit more organization on where to find games for it and such.

Maybe someone could start up a discord?

I occasionally zip into it because of the flavor I tried to build into things. It's nice to recycle. Otherwise my groups just couldn't grasp 'you can do more things at once' and any new groups I tried to run for couldn't grok it.

However, I have also briefly used this site (in particular the Half-Burnt Manual) in my CV as examples of project management and my gaming chops for running a library RPG program, which is amusing.

Warpmind said

at 5:51 pm on Jun 20, 2021

The group I played two concurrent campaigns with never had trouble with the multiple actions bit - and we mainly had a D&D 3.5 background at the time.
What really bogged down the game over time was combat - in particular, internal kung fu seems to be the main culprit in that regard; doing the maths and deciding on which techniques to use with any given roll just ate up minutes; toward the end of the campaigns, a combat round could eat up over an hour between calculations, descriptions, and counters...

That said... the Deeds system is pretty brilliant, external styles are quite solid, and the ripple mechanics are almost surprisingly easy to get the hang of...

If anyone were to, say, make a "second edition", streamlining internal styles might be just the nudge the system needs...

...I do have some ideas, but I don't think I'm the guy to pull it off, what with the licensing issues...

...then again, if EOS is defunct, as it may appear (with no updates for the past four years and change), what WOULD the legal state of the game be?

So, it just so happens that my regular gaming crew wanted to do a one-shot in a new system. Digging through my collection, I was inspired to dig out LotW. And wouldn't you know it, they had a good time and wanted to do another!
Now admittedly, I'm not running it fully by the book. My attempt at doing that for a larger group was a bit exhausting, and I was reluctant to do that again. I thought I might throw out a couple of tweaks that we're using in case anyone was interested. I don't have a clear house rule document at this time, but here are some of the core points:

- No more multiple rolls per round. Each player now rolls their Lake at the start of the round (which is 7+(2xRank), i.e. 11 for a 4th Rank). This pool is where all the initiative, attack, and defense sets come from. The original way just bogs down too much with seven players.
- No Rippling rolls in combat, just the end-of-battle ones. Instead, the better you do on the attack/damage, the more Ripples you apply (0-9 is 1, 10-19 is 2, etc.). Another rule to speed combat, but is also there to emulate the way that warriors can take grievous blows and keep fighting but then drop dead afterward.
- Medium/Heavy armor reduce the # of Ripples taken per attack by 1 or 2, respectively. Makes up for the fact that Chi Threshold now only matters at the end of battle.
- Energy attacks (freeze, burn, etc.) are now a type of Disrupt. Internal techs that add to they EA's damage instead inflict 1, 2, or 3 ripples when applied (+5 becomes 1 Ripple, etc.) The Freeze/Poison Disrupts replace the normal action penalties Disrupts apply with a breath penalty.
- The "Fine, I'll take you all on!" rule. If a character or NPC is being outnumbered by attackers, they add a number of dice per rank (5th = 1, 4th = 2, etc.) to their Lake for each turn. If the outnumbering happens in the middle of the round, they add and roll the new dice at that time.

They'll probably be more as we go, but that's the gist at this time.
